Introduction
You’re about to start watching the first episode of Game of Thrones’ final season, and you see a blank screen instead of the show. Or maybe you’re trying to watch HBO Max and can’t get past the log-in screen. Of course, this can happen in any streaming service, but there are some reasons your TV may not show a video after signing in with HBO Max on your TV or streaming device. Here are some possible solutions:
Has the HBO Max app launched on your TV or streaming device yet?
HBO Max has launched on several streaming devices, including Apple TV, Roku, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Samsung Smart TVs. But if you’re still having trouble signing into HBO Max on your TV or streaming device, it might have something to do with your particular Smart TV model. In addition to those devices listed above, HBO Max is available as a standalone app directly from your TV manufacturer’s website (if you’re lucky enough to own one). It’s important to note that this doesn’t mean HBO Max will ever be available on all smart TVs; instead, it means there is currently no way for us (or anyone else) to know which brands are supported. However, we can confirm that:
- Amazon Fire TV does not support HBO Max at this time
- Google Chromecast does not support HBO Max at this time
In general terms: If you bought your Smart TV from Google or Amazon, then chances are good that it won’t work with any apps other than their store—and even if it did support them, there would be no guarantee they would ever launch on these devices in the future anyway!
Have you signed up for an HBO Max account?
You may not need to sign up for a new HBO Max account if you have an HBO subscription. If your HBO account is associated with your current cable provider or streaming service, you can keep it as-is—you’ll still be able to access any of your favorite HBO shows and movies on the same device. However, if you don’t currently have an existing HBO account and want access to the network’s extensive library of content on all devices in one place, you will need to sign up for a new account with this service.
Is your subscription billed through a third party, like Apple or Google?
If you’re using a third-party subscription, like Apple or Google, you’ll need to sign in with that account instead of your HBO Max account. For example, if you’re using an Apple TV, you can sign in with your HBO Max account on the HBO Max app.
This does not apply if you have HBO through an internet provider (such as Comcast) or a cable subscription (like Spectrum) that also gives access to HBO content.
Are you signed in with the email address and password you used to sign up for HBO Max?
If you’re signed in to the email address and password you used when you originally set up your HBO Max account, then the first thing to check is whether or not the email address has changed. If it has, simply signs out of HBO Max on all devices and log back in with the correct information.
If this does not fix the problem or if you were never logged in with an email address when setting up your account, contact Customer Support at 1-800-579-9883 or email them at help@hbomax.com.
Have you restarted your device since signing up for HBO Max?
Have you restarted your device since signing up for HBO Max?
This is often the fastest way to solve many issues with TVs, game consoles, and streaming devices. You can do this by:
- Use the power button on your remote control or TV’s remote to turn it off. Please wait a few seconds before turning it back on again.
- Press and hold down the power button on your remote control until you see a message telling you that “Powering Off,” followed by another saying, “[Device Name] will now power off.”
Here are some possible solutions if you’re having trouble signing into HBO Max on your TV.
If you’re having trouble signing into HBO Max on your TV, here are some possible solutions.
- Ensure that your email address and password are correct.
- Ensure your subscription is billed through the correct provider (e.g., Comcast). You may need to contact this provider for help if you’re having trouble with billing or service issues with HBO Max subscriptions.
- Restart your device after signing up for HBO Max to see if it resolves any connectivity issues with the app or service.
- Install the latest version of the HBO Max app on all supported devices before trying again!
Conclusion
If you can sign in to HBO Max on a mobile device or laptop (but not on TV), then it’s likely that the issue is with your internet connection. If all your devices have access except your TV, we recommend restarting your router and testing again after about 15 minutes.
